neuschwanstein

(aunt kathy, me, aunt nancy, uncle randy)

This is the Neuschwanstein Castle. It is a fairly new castle. This castle was the inspiration for the castle in Sleeping Beauty and the Disneyland Castle. King Ludwig had it built in the late nineteenth century. Listen to this. It took 16 years to built it to it current state, but only 17 of the 63 rooms were finished because Ludwig died. He was pronounced crazy without any official exam, and the next day King Ludwig died under “mysterious circumstances.” At the time, Ludwig was building three other castles so his family decided not to complete this one. King Ludwig only lived in this castle three weeks before he died. This is a great example of how we should not collect expensive possessions here on earth.

What it means: Like Ships Upon The Sea

The title of my blog was inspired by an metaphor C.S. Lewis creates in his book, Mere Christianity. Here are a few excerpts that were thought provoking to me.

“. . . There are two ways in which the human machine goes wrong. One is when human individuals drift apart from one another, or else collide with one another and do one another damage, by cheating or bullying. The other is when things go wrong inside the individual-when the different parts of him (his different faculties and desires and so on) either drift apart or interfere with one another. You can get the idea plain if you think of us as a fleet of ships sailing in formation. The voyage will be a success only, in the first place, if the ships do not collide and get in one another’s way; and, secondly, if each ship is seaworthy and has her engines in good order. As a matter of fact, you cannot have either of these two things without the other. If the ships keep on having collisions they will not remain seaworthy very long. On the other hand, if their steering gears are out of order they will not be able to avoid collisions.”

“. . . Morality, then, seems to be concerned with three things. Firstly, with fair play and harmony between individuals. Secondly, with what might be called tidying up or harmonising the things inside each individual. Thirdly, with the general purpose of human life as a whole: what man was made for: what course the whole fleet ought to be on . . .”

I hibernate in the summer, but now I’m back! And I’ve upgraded to WP 2.9.

MAD MEN YOURSELF

Tagged by No Theft to “Mad Men” myself. This is pretty swanky. I think I could go with this look.

Faith. Hope. Love.

Recently I’ve been considering these three things. For me, all three of them are quite difficult.

faith: firm belief in something for which there is no proof
hope: to cherish a desire with anticipation
love: unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another

To me, they are almost synonymous. Especially faith & hope. How can you have faith without hope, and hope without faith?

I’ve been struggling with faith recently. For me it seems like one of those things were you’re supposed to “just do it, don’t think about it.” A heart over mind type thing. In an interview, blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn once said that when he plays guitar, what he plays has to come from the heart – if he starts to think about it, then his mind gets in the way of his heart.

I want to have more faith, but I can’t just think about it.

Trafic (1971)

Wow, I just watched this film and it was amazing. Recently, I joined Netflix’s free month trial. I really like the visual style, as well as the flow and quirks that director Jacques Tati comes up with. I’m excited to watch more of his movies!
